The Leadership Lid

The leadership lid is an idea that bothers some people and squarely runs in direct opposition to the idea that “if you just want something enough and work hard anything is possible.”

The genetic code that was passed to you by your grandparents and parents combined with the environment you grew up in shaped your personality. Your personality profile gives you amazing abilities in some areas of business and life and in other areas causes a bottleneck and in some cases a lid that hard as you try you will not be able to get past. 

What does that mean?

It means that some people have the profile to be a CEO and some people don’t! It means that some people are literally built to be leaders and some people are built to be followers. No amount of “hard work, belief, and dreaming” will change this fact.

It means that very often our desires are not aligned with reality and it means that we need to do a careful self-examination before we commit to a path that will lead us to either failure, disappointment, and unhappiness or success, achievement, and bliss.

Doing a SWOT Analysis on Yourself

S – Strengths

W – Weaknesses

O – Opportunities

T – Threats

Understanding your strengths, your weaknesses, your opportunities, and the threats you face in business and life is a critical skill and it starts with developing a deep understanding of who you are at your core. You cannot escape your personality, you cannot change your genetic makeup, but you can learn how to use who you are to your advantage.

Don’t Underestimate yourself

Doing a self-examination and having a deep understanding of your makeup as a person does not mean underestimating your abilities. If you are a leader than lead. If you are not built to be a CEO that doesn’t mean that you can’t be successful. It doesn’t mean you can’t own a successful business or make an amazing living.

It means that at some point if you are a business owner you may need to hire a CEO. If you are an employee it may mean that you should set your sights on a different position that reports to a great CEO.

Leadership also comes in many forms and does not require a title. Lead to the best of your ability and surround yourself with great people that have strengths that offset your weaknesses.

This section I write to entrepreneurs, executives, managers, and employees. This is for everyone because it is one of the most common mistakes people make in business.

These two rules are absolute and yet are often ignored:

Rule 1 – Performance in a current job means nothing when making the decision to promote someone!

When someone is doing a great job it is because they are well suited to do that job. Their personality profile matches the profile of the job. This is no indication on its own that they should be promoted to a management or leadership role.

Rule 2 – How long a person has been with a company means nothing when making the decision to promote someone!

In my industry, I have seen people promoted to Parts Management and Branch Management positions solely because they have been working at that branch for many years. The length of time on the job on its own is not an indication that they should be promoted to a management or leadership role.

How to find leaders

Leadership skills can be taught but being a leader is not something that you teach. You are a leader, it is who you are at your core, and you don’t need a title to be a true leader.

If you are looking for a leader for your company then you need to build a profile of exactly what kind of leader you are looking for. Then you need to profile everyone in your company and find the person that has a personality profile that matches.

At this point, you need to identify what education and experience this individual may be missing, if any, and ensure that this person receives what they need to become the leader they are born to be.

In Conclusion

If you are building a good organization you need great people. If you are going to build a GREAT organization you need great people in every position. You need people that are perfectly matched for the role they are hired to perform.

If you are trying to advance personally you need to understand how you are built, what you can and can’t do, and you need to put yourself unapologetically in the path of opportunity. Start being a leader today in your current role so that you demonstrate that you have what it takes to be promoted to a leadership position.
