The Confidence Factor – Your USP for Life

Confidence is one of the things in life that is absolutely necessary to achieve great things and can be an even greater liability if misused or misunderstood.

In sales, the acronym U.S.P stands for Unique Selling Proposition and is usually applied to the thing that differentiates the company, salesperson, and offer from their competitors. 

Used effectively the salesperson demonstrates that the customer should do business with them and not someone else and the customer makes a buying decision because they believe that this company, salesperson, and the offer is what is best for them.

In life, the level of confidence you have can be your U.S.P. or Unique Selling Proposition. Let’s face it without confidence it is very difficult to accomplish great things. This is also a cautionary tale because being overconfident can cause even the most successful to come crashing down.

The Confidence Factor Explained 

Let me share two stories that demonstrate how confidence leads to success!

The Prettiest Girl In Town

The prettiest girl in town walks into the bar. Bill, the kindest, most loving, and wonderful man that is absolutely perfect for this woman sits in the corner nervously racking his brain for something to say to introduce himself. As he fidgets and frets another man walks up to her and says “Hi my name is Jeff, can I buy you a drink?”

“Who is this Jeff? This guy is all wrong for this girl! No one will love this girl like I would!” thinks Bill.

After being subjected to a night of watching Jeff and his dream girl dance together he watches in horror as Jeff and his dream girl leaves the bar together later that night!

The Promotion

The big meeting is coming up with the executives and the smartest person on the team, Cheryl,  will finally have the opportunity to pitch her big idea. An idea that will earn the company millions.

“It’s finally my time!” Cheryl thinks.

As everyone settles in and the meeting starts the discussion circles the main problem that Cheryl’s big idea will solve. Cheryl, the smartest person on the team, sits motionless, sweating profusely, staring at the floor, willing her legs to cause them to stand up, willing her mouth to open and say…

“I’ve got an idea!” Sally says.

Cheryl’s head snaps up, “who said that?” she thinks.

Sally, flips her hair, laughs and explains her idea. The idea is good but not the great master plan that Cheryl has developed. The executives listen and abruptly end the meeting by announcing that Sally will take the lead in implementing her idea.

The Upside to Confidence

As we clearly see from these two stories the person with confidence may not necessarily be the best suited or the most talented person in the room. Yet because they are confident enough to go after what they want they often will win!

Confidence is something that some people are born with and some people have to develop. For the people that have to work at it is important to remember that without you speaking up others are losing out.

In both our stories a better option was available and yet because Bill and Cheryl lacked the confidence to say something the pretty girl never knew that an amazing guy who would be perfect for her was sitting in the same room or the executives never knew that a better option that would earn millions was available because Bill and Cheryl didn’t speak up.

Your ideas are valuable, you are valuable so don’t hesitate to ask for what you want and tell the people you need to about your great ideas.

The Downside to Confidence

We have all met that person who just exudes confidence. The person who never doubts themselves, always assumes they know the answers and expects the world to give them everything they want.

People who suffer from self-doubt hate people like that! Yet really it’s more about how you feel about yourself, isn’t it? Is it really that you want them to have less or is it that you just want what’s rightfully yours?

The one thing that may help you is to remember that there is a huge difference between being competent and confident compared to being incompetent and overconfident. The latter never lasts, eventually, the incompetence catches up with them.

So in order to be truly successful and win the day work on developing both competence and confidence. In the long run that is the winning combination.

In Conclusion

Confidence is necessary to achieve great things! Without confidence, your voice will never be heard.

Being overconfident really is only a problem if you are also incompetent. Don’t waste your time focusing on other people. Believe in yourself and others will believe in you and your ideas.

If you are lacking confidence than take comfort in the fact that confidence is something that you can develop through building competence. Your ideas, your contribution, even your love will only ever have an impact on others if you have the confidence to let it out for all the world to benefit from.
