3 Steps to Hiring Outstanding Employees

In this article we discuss the impact of personality profiles on the hiring process and outline three steps to hiring outstanding people.

Your employees are your greatest asset. Hire and invest in the right people and they will take care of the customers. The customers will, in turn, take care of the shareholders. It’s a simple idea but how do you hire the right people?

Let’s look at three steps:

Step 1 – Identify your WHY

Why does your company exist? Why should your customers buy from you instead of your competition? Understanding your WHY will help you identify the kind of people you are looking to hire. Southwest Airlines hired cheerleaders, Apple hired rebels, and McDonald’s hires teenagers. It wasn’t a mistake, these companies purposefully hired specific types of people that fit into their business for very specific well-defined reasons. Your business exists for a reason, it has a personality that has been shaped by the people that work at your business. If your not happy with the results your business is producing it’s time to examine your WHY. Once you know the type of person that fits into your business you can move on to the next step.

Step 2 – Profile the Role

Each role in your company requires the person who fills the role to have a specific set of personality traits for optimal performance. Therefore building a profile for the role is the next step. If for example, you were hiring a sales person you would create a profile for the role that would include things like being results driven, a natural communicator, and you would consider other factors like what personality traits allow the person to consistently handle rejection. You would also consider the type of sales person you require, some sales roles require a lot of “hunting” for new business while other sales roles require more “farming” or cultivating the business you already have or that marketing produces.

Step 3 – Match the Person to the Role

The final step is to go through the hiring process. Once you understand the type of person you are looking for and you have a clearly defined profile for the role, you can start looking for someone to fill that role. Instead of starting with the normal steps of interviewing each candidate for experience and education I suggest that you prescreen each candidate for a personality match to the profile you have created for the role. This will save time and money. When you have several candidates that have personality matches to the profile you can then interview them and discuss their experience and education.
