Why are you doing what you are doing?

It is truly surprising how few people can answer that simple question.

Consider the use of Social Media in business for instance.

Why are you posting what you are posting?

When I have asked business people this question I have received many answers that can be summed up with this one sentiment; “I don’t know why but I don’t want to be left behind.”

Basically, people feel compelled to post because they are afraid that if they don’t they will lose something.

They are not sure what they will lose but it scares them.

Furthermore, they don’t know what to post so they basically copy what other people are posting.

The result is that effort and time is put toward an activity that is perceived as being necessary to remain competitive with little to no thought about strategy or outcome.

Now to be clear, in the past I have made this mistake, and I raise this subject with three very clear objectives:

1. To challenge business people to think differently about their social media strategy.

2. To enhance my personal brand by standing out as an individual who challenges people with thought-provoking posts that have high Use-Value for the reader.

3. To increase the size and QUALITY of my audience so that I can monetize my personal brand.

It is my contention that we need to approach every aspect of our business in the same way. Establish the outcome, develop a strategy, and then execute and achieve the outcome.

This includes our social media activity. Without being perfectly clear about the outcome, the result, the target, whatever you want to call it, you will never reach your goals.

Worse yet, you will waste valuable resources.

The solution is to be very clear about your outcome.

To be decisive and to pursue your outcome with F.O.C.U.S. which stands for Follow One Course Until Success.

So, next time you post something on Social Media, ask yourself, “why am I posting what I am about to post?”
